Syllabus for Discipling our Students
Teacher: Pastor Michael Mauriello
Goal of the Class: To continue learning to disciple our students through lecture, discussion, and hands on team work. We will learn to engage our students with the curriculum they are learning in their Sunday School programming (Desiring God).
Fall 2009
Week 0: While Pastor Mike was out of town, the ABF answered some brainstorming questions concerning their educational questions and needs about discipling students.
Week 1: Lost Children of Rockdale County (PBS Frontline Video): What are the problems we are facing as disciplers of our students?
Week 2: What is a human? What makes a person a person? How is a person different from God? How is a person made in God’s image? What makes relationship with God possible?
Week 3: How Humans Change and Develop: The 10 Rules of Development, The Five Aspects of development, a close look at cognitive development and relational development.
Week 4: The Three Triangles of Being: Understanding the core questions of philosophy, the core concerns of spiritual development, and the core concepts of discernment and growth.
Week 5: What is a disciple? Part 1. Brain storming session on discipleship, getting our ideas on the table about what frames discipleship and following Christ. (Dust by Rob Bell)
Week 6: What is a disciple? Part 2. Pastor Michael’s concrete framework for discipleship and philosophy of youth ministry.
Week 7: The Difference between education and formation. Taking a look about how God changes someone from the inside out.
Week 8: Education Part 1. Brainstorming session concerning public, private, and home schooling options, and discussion about what should be the core considerations of curriculum.
Week 9: Education Part 2. Pastor Michael’s presentation on how to help ask good questions concerning education and helping your children process unsettling information.
Week 10: Merchants of Cool (PBS Frontline special): Discussion involving how the media is shaping culture through a feedback loop, and how Christian culture may unintentionally be doing the same thing.
Week 11: Biblical Theology 1. Brainstorming session on working through the Biblical material.
Week 12: Biblical Theology, Systematic Theology, and Resources. Pastor Michael’s framework for theological help in education, and what resources every family should have on their shelves.
Week 13: The Human and the Holy Spirit. The limits of discipleship and the power of the person of the Holy Spirit.
